Commander Brian LeGare assumed the duties as Executive Officer of Naval Submarine Base New London, in Groton, Connecticut in June 2025.
A native of Hopewell Junction, New York, Commander LeGare is a 2007 graduate of Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps in 2007. He also holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College (with distinction).
After completing Nuclear Power Training and the Submarine Officer Basic Course, Commander LeGare reported to USS Rhode Island (SSBN 740) [Gold] in Kings Bay, Georgia, serving as a division officer from December 2008 to November 2011. Follow-on sea assignments have included serving as Combat Systems Officer in USS Florida (SSGN 728) [Gold] in Kings Bay, Georgia, from September 2014 to May 2017; and, serving as Executive Officer in USS Delaware (SSN 791) in Groton, from May 2020 to January 2022.
Commander LeGare's ashore assignments include: Operations Officer at the Naval Submarine Support Center, Bangor, Washington; Officer Instructor at Naval Submarine School, Groton; and serving as the Acting Deputy Director and Senior Naval Advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Development and Emerging Capabilities in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.
His most recent assignment prior to Naval Submarine Base New London, was at the Naval War College where he graduated as the College of Naval Warfare Honor Graduate.
Commander LeGare's personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and several unit and service awards.
