Commander Reginald Preston

Commander Reg Preston assumed the duties as Executive Officer of Naval Submarine Base New London, in Groton, Connecticut in September 2019.

Originally from Lyman, Nebraska, Commander Preston graduated from Iowa State University and received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) in 2003.

Following completion of Nuclear Power Training and the Submarine Officer Basic Course in 2004, he reported to USS Helena (SSN 725), in San Diego, California. Qualifying in Submarines, he completed both Western and Eastern Pacific deployments.

Commander Preston then served as a Senior Visiting Lecturer and Student Advisor on the staff at Cornell University NROTC in Ithaca, New York.

Upon completion of the Submarine Officer Advanced Course in February 2010, he reported to USS Chicago (SSN 721) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as Engineer Officer. Relieving early in an Engineered Overhaul at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Commander Preston led the crew through the overhaul, homeport shift to the territory of Guam in the Western Pacific, and certification for tasking in the Seventh Fleet area of responsibility.

Assigned to Submarine Group TWO following his Engineer tour, he served as both the Operations Officer and the Chief of Staff for the Enlisted Women in Submarines Task Force.

Commander Preston then led the Historic Ship Nautilus (SSN 571) as Officer in Charge and Submarine Force Museum as Director, redefining the long-term overhaul requirements of the world’s first nuclear warship for the next 60 years and advancing the museum’s prominence and reputation.

Most recently, Commander Preston directed the Submarine On Board Training (SOBT) Program, providing training to the entire submarine fleet at the right time in Sailors careers, and in the right place to optimize their professional development.

In addition to his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering from Iowa State, Commander Preston has earned a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from Cornell University and a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
