Command Master Chief Christopher D. Farrar was raised in Syracuse NY and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1995. After completing Recruit Training and ET “A” School in Great Lakes, IL he attended “C” school at Fleet Training Center, San Diego, CA.
In 1998, he reported to USS GARY (FFG-51) in San Diego, CA. He deployed in 1999 to the Western Pacific in support of Coordinated Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT 99) and “hull swapped” with USS THACH (FFG-43) deploying on WESTPAC in 2001 in support of UN sanctions on Iraq.
In 2002 he was selected for duty at the WHITE HOUSE COMMUNICATIONS AGENCY (WHCA). He was advanced to Chief Petty Officer in 2005 and deployed on numerous Presidential missions. While there he served as First Sergeant, Operations Chief and Presidential Radio Mission Lead.
2007 he reported to Naval Special Warfare, SPECIAL RECONNAISSANCE TEAM TWO (NSW SRT-2) at Little Creek, VA. Deploying in 2008 performing ground combat operations with Joint Special Operations Task Force (JSOTF-I) Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and in 2010 again with Combined Joint Special Operations task Force (CJSOTF-A) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). He was advanced to Senior Chief in 2011, serving as Department Chief and Senior Enlisted Advisor.
In late 2011 he reported onboard USS ANZIO (CG-68) in Norfolk, VA. There he served as Combat Systems Department Chief, assisting in Battle E honors. He was selected for the Command Senior Chief Program in 2013.
In 2014 he reported as Command Senior Chief for LITTORAL COMBAT SHIP CREW 206. He was promoted to Command Master Chief in May 2016, completing successful rotational crewed deployments onboard USS CORONADO (LCS-4) and USS JACKSON (LCS-6), earning Battle E honors in 2016.
In early 2017 he reported onboard USS LASSEN (DDG-82) in Mayport, FL as Command Master Chief, completing an extended OFRP Sustainment Phase, successful CNO Maintenance Availability (DSRA) and OFRP Basic Phase workup cycle in preparations for deployment with the USS HARRY S. TRUMAN Carrier Strike Group.
In June 2019 he reported to NAVAL WEAPONS STATION YORKTOWN, VA as installation Command Master Chief. WPNSTA YORKTOWN was the 2021 Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic nominee for the CNIC Installation Excellence award. WPNSTA YORKTOWN earned 3 consecutive Retention Excellence Awards; 3 Five-Star Galley/Culinary Excellence Awards; and a myriad of Safety, Energy, and Environmental awards – including the 2021 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Award for Natural Resources Conservation (Large Installation).
In November 2021 he reported as Command Master Chief of USS ARLINGTON (LPD-24), successfully deploying to the C6F AOR in early 2022 as a part of the KEARSARGE Amphibious Ready Group, earning Battle E honors in 2022. He led the ship through sustainment phase and a 550 day CNO maintenance availability at NASSCO/General Dynamics shipyards in Portsmouth VA.
In June 2024 Master Chief Farrar took responsibility as Command Master Chief of JOINT EXPEDITIONARY BASE LITTLE CREEK/FORT STORY.
Master Chief Farrar is a proud graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 179 Brown) and the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course (Class 129). He is also a graduate of Executive Leadership Symposium (ELS) in 2018, a Keystone Course (Class 21-2) Fellow, and graduate of the Shore Senior Leaders Course (SSLC) and Advanced Command Master Chief Course in 2024. Additionally, he holds an Associate’s degree of Science/Electronics Technology from Excelsior College and is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree of Science/Liberal Arts.
He is qualified Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist, and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist along with certifications as a Combat Support Technician and Combat Communicator for Naval Special Warfare.
His personal military awards and decorations include: The Presidential Service Badge, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 Awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 Awards), Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 Awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM), and numerous Unit, Campaign, and Joint Service awards.
