Captain Matt Schlarmann

CAPT Matt “Squeeze” Schlarmann is a native of Dubuque, Iowa. He is a 2000 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in History and a 2010 graduate of both Kansas State University with a Master of Science in Adult and Continuing Education and the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College.  He received his Wings of Gold as a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in February 2002.

Schlarmann served operationally in Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 140 “Patriots” deployed with Carrier Air Wing SEVEN (CVW-7) onboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) and USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69) in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. He also served operationally in VAQ-132 “Scorpions” deploying to Misawa AB, Japan, in support of Far East contingency operations.  Command assignments include VAQ-137 “Rooks” deployed with CVW-1 onboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and NATO exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE.  While in command of VAQ-137, the squadron was awarded the 2018 CNAL Battle “E”, 2018 CNO Aviation Safety “S”, and the Admiral Arthur W. Radford Award for highest achievement in electronic warfare among all VAQ squadrons.

Schlarmann’s shore assignments include tours with VAQ-129 “Vikings” as an instructor in the EA-18G Growler; Naval Personnel Command as placement officer for the Prowler and Growler community, Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC), Training Wing SIX (TW 6), and NAS Pensacola; and as the principal deputy legislative assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS).

Schlarmann reported to Naval Station Norfolk as Executive Officer in February 2023 and assumed command as the 52nd Commanding Officer in August 2024. 
 
Schlarmann has accumulated more than 3,000 hours in the EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler and 400 carrier arrested landings.  His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal Strike/Flight (two), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two) and various unit, service, and campaign awards.
