Captain Ray Glenn is a native of Humboldt, Tennessee and enlisted in the Navy in 1992. After Recruit Training, he attended both Naval Nuclear Field “A” School and Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida. From there he went to his first sea tour aboard USS Frank Cable (AS 40). While onboard Glenn was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program and subsequently received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina. After commissioning, Glenn attended the Surface Warfare Officer School’s Division Officer’s Course in Newport, RI.
Glenn’s initial officer sea tour was onboard USS Ticonderoga (CG 47) as Gunnery Officer. Other sea tours include Machinery One Division Officer on USS George Washington (CVN 73), Operations Officer on USS Cole (DDG 67), Main Propulsion Assistant on USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), Executive Officer on USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) and USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) and Commanding Officer of USS Gonzalez (DDG 66). For his last sea tour, he served as the Reactor Officer on USS Nimitz (CVN 68) making him the fifth African American to ever serve as Reactor Officer onboard a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier.
Glenn’s shore tours include a tour with the sea going staff of Commander Strike Force Training Atlantic (Carrier Strike Group Four), where he coordinated live exercise training for COMPTUEX and JTFEX. Other shore tours include the staff of Commander Pacific Fleet where he served as a nuclear inspector on the Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, military analyst on the Joint Staff, J7 as part of the Joint Coalition for Operational Analysis division, senior readiness assessor in the N44 department on the staff of Commander Naval Surface Forces Atlantic and as Executive Assistant to Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.
Captain Glenn assumed duties as Executive Officer of Naval Station Norfolk in August of 2024.
Glenn has also completed his nuclear engineer’s qualification with Naval Reactors. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service medal, the Meritorious Service medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation medal (3 awards), and the Navy Achievement medal (3 awards).
