CMDCM Tommy Chavira enlisted in the Navy from Houston, Texas, on May 13, 2003 and completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., followed by Seaman Apprentice “A” School. He earned an associate degree in food science from the Culinary Arts Institute of Houston and is qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist.
CMDCM Chavira’s past assignments include Flag Mess Culinary Specialist aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), supporting Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group ONE; Individual Augmentee deployment to Afghanistan in support of a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghazni Province, where he led dining facility operations supporting joint civil-military and counterinsurgency operations; Recruiter, Navy Recruiting District Houston; and Supply Department Leading Chief Petty Officer aboard USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), where he supported logistics and provisioning operations for more than 700 Sailors and Marines during deployment.
His shore assignments include Culinary Specialist Executive Services Program, Commander Region Southeast to Commander, Navy Installations Command Headquarters, where he provided executive-level culinary support and enterprise program oversight while serving Vice Admiral Mary M. Jackson; Executive Services support to Vice Admiral Scott Gray across EURAFCENT and Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic areas of responsibility; and Staff Enlisted Leader, Commander, Navy Installations Command, advising on matters affecting the enlisted force across the Navy shore enterprise. He currently serves as Command Master Chief, Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads.
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal(five awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal(five awards), Army Achievement Medal, and various others.
