A native of Chicago, Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Blackmon enlisted in the United States Navy as a Nuclear Electricians Mate in 2007. He was selected for the Seaman to Admiral-21 Commissioning Program and attended the University of Utah. He graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics.
His afloat tours include: Safety Officer, USS Cowpens (CG 63) from Sept. 2023 to July 2024; Plans and Tactics Officer, USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125) from Sept. 2022 to Sept. 2023; Weapons, USS Monterey (CG 61) from Nov. 2020 to Aug. 2022; Reactor Propulsion Division Officer, USS George Washington (CVN 73) from June 2015 to Sept. 2017; CF-Division Officer, USS Stout (DDG 55) from Nov. 2013 to May 2015.
Lt. Cmdr. Blackmon’s ashore tour was as Electrical Officer and Conversion Coordinator, USS San Francisco (SSN 711) from Sept. 2017 to Dec. 2019.
Lt. Cmdr. Blackmon is a Surface Warfare qualified naval officer.
Lt. Cmdr. Blackmon's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various other unit and personal awards.
