CDR James McCarty is a native of Georgia. He enlisted in the Navy in August 1998 and attended naval seamanship training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL. He completed Basic Enlisted Submarine School and Missile Technician “A” school in Groton, CT followed by Missile Technician “C” school in Bangor, WA. He commissioned as a Submarine Ordnance Limited Duty Officer in October 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Brandman University and a Master of Military Operational Art and Science with a focus on Nuclear Deterrent Studies from Air University.
His sea tours include Deck Division Leading Petty Officer aboard USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730), Missile Division Leading Chief Petty Officer aboard USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730), Assistant Weapons Officer aboard USS Nevada (SSBN 733), and Weapons Officer aboard USS Nebraska (SSBN 739).
His shore tours included duty as the Vertical Missile Packaging Building Leading Petty Officer for Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific; Nuclear Weapons Safety Officer for Director, Strategic Systems Programs; Assistant Weapons Officer for Commander, Submarine Squadron 17; Student at the Air Command and Staff College’s School of Advanced Nuclear Deterrent Studies; and Weapons, Strategic Targeting, and Exercise Officer for Commander, Submarine Group 10.
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, as well as other unit and campaign awards.
