Commander, Navy Installations Command
CNIC co-hosted an AAPI Heritage Month celebration with Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) on May 25. Speakers included command leaders as well as the Federal Aviation Administration’s Office of Strategic Management Executive Director Dr. Minh A. Nguyen. The event also included cultural dance performed by the Nrityamala School of Dance and the Asian American Community Center.
Navy Region Japan
On May 30, Rear Adm. Lahti and City of Yokosuka leadership participated in a bell commemoration ceremony at Jodoji Temple. The historic bell, crafted in 1742, is the oldest in the region and it had been 78 years since the bell was sounded. It is a symbol of the friendship between the U.S. and Japan.
Naval Support Activity (NSA) Washington
NSA Washington’s Multicultural Committee facilitated a group outing to tour the National Museum of Asian Art on May 30.
Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads
NSA Hampton Roads held a food festival on May 24 with an array of dishes representing Asian American and Pacific Islander culture with additional information on each dish and its meaning or significance to its culture of origin.
Joint Region Marianas (JRM)JRM hosted a potluck celebration on May 12, where the JRM Diversity Committee recognized the leadership and achievements of region’s AAPI personnel.
Navy Region Hawaii
On May 4, the battleship USS Missouri Memorial held a blessing and unveiling of its new exhibit, Senator Daniel K. Inouye: Hawaii’s Mighty Supporter, dedicated to his life, accomplishments and his role in getting the USS Missouri to Hawaii.
Naval District Washington (NDW)
NDW ran spotlight videos of its own Asian workforce, their backgrounds and contributions to the Navy throughout the month.
The United States has commemorated May as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month since 1990. May was chosen as AAPI Heritage Month to commemorate the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and to honor the Chinese immigrants who completed the western portion of the transcontinental railroad May 10, 1869.
