About Naval Station Great Lakes:
Opened in 1911, Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) is the Navy’s largest training installation and the home of the Navy’s only Boot Camp. Located on over 1600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, the installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. NSGL supports over 50 tenant commands and elements as well as over 20,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and DoD civilians who live and work on the installation. NSGL operations, along with area military retirees and educational aid payments, increased Illinois' gross domestic product by $4.6 billion. Naval Station Great Lakes’ mission is to enable and sustain Fleet, Family and Fighter by providing superior, integrated Base Operating Support for all tenant commands and elements on the installation. Naval Station Great Lakes hosts ship reunions as well as tours for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Navy Junior ROTC, and Sea Cadets. Since 2016, more than 400 Sailors from across NSGL have contributed over 15,500 hours at 300 events in local schools and have participated in a Partnership in Education program directly supporting North Chicago schools.
