Chesapeake, Va. – Approximately 300 military members from various commands will support 30 elementary, middle, and high schools in Chesapeake and three schools in Portsmouth during Naval Support Activity (NSA) Hampton Roads’ 8th Annual "Servicing Our Schools" event on Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

These military members will help lighten the load for school teachers by volunteering to help them set up their classrooms for the upcoming academic year.  This effort allows busy teachers to focus on other responsibilities related to planning, developing, and organizing student instruction.

“Each year, we eagerly anticipate this event as it provides a valuable opportunity to further strengthen our partnership with Chesapeake Public Schools,” said Capt. Matt Olson, Commanding Officer of NSA Hampton Roads. “Teachers play a crucial role in shaping the young minds of our children, and this event is one way we can express our gratitude for all they do. Our military members are always enthusiastic about visiting the schools and offering support to these exceptional educators.”

In previous years, some of the tasks the volunteers assisted with included preparing bulletin boards, sorting books for the student book baskets, distributing textbooks, assembling student furniture, cutting out letters, organizing books for classroom libraries, and arranging furniture within the classrooms.

Note to Media: Media outlets will have the opportunity to highlight military members volunteering at Oscar Smith Middle School (2500 Rodgers Street, Chesapeake, VA 23324) on Aug. 28 at 9:00 a.m.  Outlets interested in covering this event should contact the NSA Hampton Roads Public Affairs Officer at (757) 836-1484 or (757) 770-5045.
